Testimonials

“I am now able to run again and enjoy an active sporting life.”

“In the summer of 2019 I was diagnosed with a drop foot. The problem was found to be a small cyst, which was pressing onto my peroneal nerve thus stopping any nerve signals going to my right foot. I was referred to Mr Hywel Dafydd at Morriston Hospital in Swansea to see if an operation was required. Being a person of generally good health and only having been into a hospital personally about half a dozen times in my 55 years, obviously I was a bit nervous.

However, after I met with Mr Dafydd in the autumn of 2019, I was put at ease and reassured that he would do his best to sort out the problem. He explained in detail what he would be doing during the operation process and about any post operation needs. What I particularly liked is that he didn’t promise me a complete 100% success as I had been informed that the peroneal nerve was a particularly temperamental nerve, and I would probably still have a few issues even after the operation.

I had the operation in January of 2020 and had excellent care in Morriston Hospital from both Mr Dafydd and the nurses during the time I was there. Mr Dafydd rang me personally during the spring/summer of 2020 to check on my progress and I informed him that I had about 80% mobility back in my foot with only certain things I was unable to do.

As I am writing this, I would say that my foot is now back to 95% of what it was, when I was back playing rugby in my twenties. The only thing that is slightly wrong at the moment is a very slight loss of balance on occasions.

I would like to thank Mr Dafydd for doing such a great job and I can’t thank him enough for carrying out a succesful operation and giving me back my mobility.”

“A truly exceptional consultant and surgeon.”

“I have had three separate tendon transfer operations performed by Mr Dafydd. The results have honestly been life changing. I now have functional (and straight) fingers. Mr Dafydd combines his expertise with a willingness to listen and discuss the different options. I had the utmost confidence during every surgery. He is always calm and extremely professional. Whilst researching a suitable surgeon, I discovered he came highly recommended by his peers across the UK.”

— Katy, 51, who had tendon transfer surgery in the hand

“I cannot speak highly enough of Mr Dafydd’s work and professionalism - he is undoubtably one of the best.”

“After suffering a ruptured Achilles in September 2016 and subsequent operations, I was referred to Mr Dafydd to review unstable scarring and a chronic wound on the back of my heel. Mr Dafydd explained the options to me and proposed an innovative procedure called a Medial Sural Artery Perforator Flap (first in Wales) that would repair the wound with a very high rate of success.

On the morning of the procedure Mr Dafydd again explained in detail how the operation would go, post-operative care and expected outcome. The care and attention from Mr Dafydd and the staff on the ward was exceptional.

The repair to my ankle is unbelievable with the follow-up consultations of a very high standard, ensuring the best results were achieved. I am now back fully fit and active.”

— Peter, 38, who had microsurgical reconstruction of his leg

“He believed me when I felt no one else did.”

“I was very fortunate that I was allocated Mr Dafydd to take over my case back in 2019. My experience with having him as a consultant has been nothing but positive. When dealing with consultants in the past I have always felt like another patient/hospital number and nothing more. I can not say I felt the same at all with Mr Dafydd. I felt he listened and tried to understand everything I was saying and treat me as an individual. From having a consultation all the way through to post op I feel my best interest was put first. I feel that he is always very honest no matter how hard the truth is but it is always delivered it in a professional and caring manner. I can’t recommend Mr Dafydd enough as he has done everything in his power to try and get my arm out of as much pain possible and it is something I will never be able to repay him for.”

— Hannah, 22, who had revision ulnar nerve surgery

“Right from the first consultation Mr Dafydd was extremely kind, caring and professional.”

“I recently had carpal tunnel surgery carried out by Mr Hywel Dafydd. He explained everything and answered all my questions. My surgery and recovery were very straightforward and my scar is barely noticeable! Mr Dafydd’s constant support and reassurance was greatly appreciated. I am extremely grateful for the outstanding care provided by Mr Dafydd, I cannot recommend him highly enough.”

— Rebecca, 49, who had carpal tunnel surgery

“I would like to thank you for the care given to me both prior and after your surgery on my hand.”

“You have provided a truly individual service ensuring that you explained in detail what the operation entailed, making sure that I could understand in layman’s terms what you needed to do and what this would achieve in terms of improvement. The improvement following the procedure has exceeded my expectations, the ongoing advice and consultation has been much appreciated. Even due to the current Covid situation I have felt that you have been able to provide a considerable amount of advice and support, in my opinion you have gone above and beyond what I expected.”

— Geoff, 55, who had nerve reconstruction surgery in his wrist

“From my initial consultation, Mr Dafydd was very professional, very knowledgeable and would listen to my concerns and answer all my questions.”

“Throughout the whole process, Mr Dafydd has been very sensitive in all his communication, particularly when explaining the diagnosis and the next steps. I felt safe with his professional expertise and his interpersonal skills. I could not fault the process of my biopsy and then my surgical procedure - he was caring, informative, and sincere. The physical result of the amputation is exceptional, his surgical skills enabled my healing process and a good recovery.

The post care provided by Mr Dafydd and the team he guides has been exemplary. No question was too small and I continue to feel safe knowing I received the best care possible. I would highly recommend Mr Dafydd to any of my family, friends, and colleagues if they were to need similar medical care as myself.”

“I think of Mr Dafydd as someone who is very much patient-centred and has a caring attitude to them.”

I first met Mr Dafydd approximately six years ago, shortly after being referred to him by another consultant. He agreed to see me as a matter of urgency and gave me a very early morning appointment time just so he was able to fit me in to his busy schedule. It was a long consultation during which he listened carefully to what I had to say and gave his opinion on what treatment would be appropriate. He clearly explained his diagnosis, the procedure that it would involve and the chances of success, which were not exactly high. I had plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

Just a few weeks later, I was admitted for surgery, after which I experienced an innovative form of pain control which I was very impressed with. I was completely satisfied with the care I received from Mr Dafydd and his team both before admission and during my stay. I also received extensive aftercare. Over a period of time my condition gradually improved and there has been a large degree of success. I have been very pleased with the outcome.

Roughly four years later, I was referred to Mr Dafydd again for a different problem, this time by my GP. After my appointment he arranged for me to have the necessary tests as quickly as possible and arranged to see me at a follow up clinic. He is still monitoring my condition.

I hold him and his professional skills in high regard and wholeheartedly recommend him.”

— Lisa, 58, who had surgery for ulnar nerve damage

“I was very fortunate to have my hand operated on by Mr Dafydd.”

“I had very limited mobility in my left wrist due to damage done during carpal tunnel surgery (which was done in a different hospital). I couldn’t flex my wrist and my grip was very limited. I also had pain and uncomfortable sensation due to nerve damage. I was lucky enough to get a call in April 2020 asking if I was available to have repair surgery carried out the next day! This was totally unexpected as it was in the early days of the Covid crisis and I just assumed my surgery was going to be delayed indefinitely.

The whole experience was so reassuring and Mr Dafydd explained fully what was going to happen. I was so relaxed during the procedure, that when he asked would I like to look at what was being done, mid surgery, I was brave enough to do so!

My recovery was excellent and even within a couple of days I was amazed at the improvement in the range of movement in my wrist. I will never have full recovery from the previous damage caused. However, I will always be grateful to Mr Dafydd for allowing me to carry out simple tasks like using a knife and fork without someone helping me to cut my food, walking my dogs without assistance and also being able to drive longer distances.”

— Lydia, 52, who had surgery to fix complications after carpal tunnel surgery

“I was reassured by his calm, measured, and professional manner.”

“After contracting meningitis and sepsis in 2017, I needed four amputations of my limbs. Mr Dafydd informed me he would save as much as he could for each of my limbs. The process was obviously very traumatic but I was reassured by his calm, measured and professional manner. In the time that followed my operations, Mr Dafydd would make a point of visiting me to check on my well-being and progress even if he had been working for many hours. I found that to be very reassuring and it was much appreciated. After a rigorous and relentless rehabilitation phase, I was able stand on prosthetic limbs after seven months. I now walk pretty much 5 days of a week. I am currently building the strength up in my left lower arm with a view to fit a functional prosthetic left hand. Mr Dafydd has also offered me further surgery of my right lower arm, which I will look to undertake in the future.”

— Clive, 46, who had amputation surgery

“Throughout the whole process he was clear and concise about the procedure and extremely attentive to my questions, giving me an honest understanding of my recovery post surgery.”

I am a single below knee amputee who is considerably active due to my work role. I had been experiencing sharp pains in my residual limb, had developed a neuroma and had numerous issues with my scar due to the cumulative effect of my work which was beginning to affect my quality of life.

Mr Dafydd suggested that I have revisional surgery on my residual limb, shortening the bone and removing the neuroma. I underwent my surgery in February 2020 at Morriston Hospital. During my stay Mr Dafydd was excellent with his communication around the procedure both pre and post op. He also did his best to keep me pain free.

More than 12 months post surgery I have not experienced any of the sharp pains that I had prior to the procedure and, after a few months rehabilitation, I returned to full time work. My residual limb has more than held up to the rigours of my work life and I have been able to start hiking on my weekends once again which has been great for my mental health.”
